Such compliance is required of all merchants and Payment Service Providers that store, process, or transmit credit card data.

PCI is the industry standard, which was created in 2004 as a collaboration among the credit card organisations MasterCard International and Visa International, each of which had previously initiated their own security standards. The individual programs, which included Visa Account Information Security (AIS) and MasterCard Site Data Protection (SDP) were incorporated into the PCI standard, creating a single approach to safeguarding sensitive data for all card brands.
